The 23-year-old British import, who's written songs for
Chris Brown and
Miley Cyrus, has a shockingly fresh 90s R&B rhythm despite her gothic appearance. On tracks like "
Abracadabra" and "
Who's Laughing Now" she reminds me of
Lauryn Hill and fellow Brit
Estelle. She even delves into reggae-tinged rhythms on "
Price Tag" and "
L.O.V.E." My favorites on the album though are the songs where she puts her vocal chords to the test. On "
Nobody's Perfect," "
Who You Are" (below), and the rock-infused ballad "
I Need," she sounds like she's aching through every bar.
