ALBUM REVIEW: Hanson's "Shout It Out"
First off, while I, like millions of other people, sang "Mmmbop" for days upon days in '96. However, I did not have them plastered all over my walls; I did not pick a favorite; and I did not buy all of their albums. The first time I listened to a Hanson album was two weeks ago, after I saw the video for "Thinking 'Bout Something." And I don't know if they've evolved or not, but I'm liking what I'm hearing.
So you get an idea of what they sound like, I'll compare them to a few of my favorite artists:
"Waiting for This"
As upbeat and slappy-happy as the Jonas Brothers.
"Give a Little"
Here the boys get sexy—no worries, they're ALL legal now—with a Robin Thicke meets Jason Mraz crooning voice.
"Make it Out Alive"
Michael Buble's big-band melody mixed with the Jonas Brothers' vibe.
"And I Waited"
Lead by the youngest bro Zack, it has the scorned sound of Maroon 5 and Rob Thomas.
"Use Me Up"
This is my favorite ballad on the album, also sung by Zack. It sort of reminds me of the deep anguish in Gavin DeGraw's "Waterfall." [Just a side note, if Zack wasn't already married with children at 24, I would lock him and Taylor Swift in a studio to crack out a couple love songs.]
