MUSIC TOPIC: Madonna's "Give Me All Your Luvin'" Video Featuring M.I.A. & Nicki Minaj

Madonna is staging a major comeback. She took a little hiatus after her last album, Hard Candy (2008), to direct a passion project, W.E., and now she's back to reclaim her Pop Queen status. I'm assuming she figured Beyonce and Pink would be busy with their newborns, and Katy Perry with her divorce (cause we all saw that coming), so she'd just swoop right on in and get comfy.

The thing is though that three years in music time is like a decade. Listeners have developed other interests, different standards, and new obsessions. The current multitude is gyrating to Rihanna, copying Beyonce's dance moves from the trillion videos she dropped before popping out a mini-B, karaokeing the hell out of every Adele song they can get their hands on, and recording themselves rapping as fast and dramatically as Nicki Minaj. So it's understandable that Madonna would try to mooch off of one of those artists' current fame and get a subliminal cosign by their mere presence. And it's even more understandable that women like Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., who no doubt grew up watching the greatness that was Madonnna, would be intensely honored to be featured on one of her tracks.

I get it. I have no qualms with living the dream. The problem I have is with 1) the song they chose to sellout on and 2) the simple fact that they did indeed sellout!

Let's pretend for a solid 60 seconds that Nicki Minaj, the self-proclaimed Barbie, who's 80% façade and 20% hood, has integrity. Let's pretend that she hasn't manufactured a personality fit for commerce. And let's pretend that she is the greatest female MC of our generation with lyrical genius that Biggie himself would tip his Yankee cap to. Why in God's name did she override everything she's worked towards as a respected rap artist for 13 seconds on a shit song? I'm surprised she didn't end her rhyme with "Yes massa!"

I won't knock Minaj too much though. At least she didn't compromise on her aesthetic, like Lady Gaga did for Beyonce in '09 for "Video Phone," or like M.I.A. did in this video. I'm sorry. Did pregnancy fry her brain? She's wearing lace and performing sexualized choreography. Not only is that out of character, it's embarrassing. The only thing that could redeem her is if she only did it to meet Minaj, and this summer they plan to release a scathing rap collaboration that'll take over the radio waves. Then and only then could I get her Rihanna-esque dirty wind out of my damn head.

As for Madonna, I'm slightly impressed that she still looks fit at 53. But that's grounds for a workout video not a comeback. She has nothing new to say and no new way to say it. She used to return with a whole new persona, but it seems like the only reinvention she can muster these days is regression, looking and acting like a 20something tart.

In case you couldn't gather by my scathing criticism, this video is horrible. It involves football players and cheerleaders, who obviously have nothing to do with the song, because she's doing the Super Bowl. The rest, the spandex, the lace, the plastic baby(?), are homages to other incarnations of herself throughout her career, as if to remind people who she is. But maybe someone should remind her. At this point, I'd rather watch Lana Del Ray during half-time. At least then, I'll know the spectacle will be intentional.

VIDEO: Beyonce's "Let's Move! Flash Workout"

Beyonce teamed up with the First Lady Michelle Obama to encourage children to eat healthy and exercise. She re-wrote and re-recorded her song "Get Me Bodied" to record a dance routine that kids can follow along with as a fun 4-minute exercise. The video is orchestrated like a flash mob in a cafeteria with children of all ages who are great dancers.

I love that a chubby kid initiates the dance, that it's mostly minorities in the video, and that they left Beyonce's dance flub in. There's a part when she sings "Now run to the left" and she runs right while everyone else runs left and you can tell she screwed up, but they just let it play and then cut to a take where she's doing it right. It shows kids that it's ok to make a mistake.

Um so, I realize this is for kids, but I so want to go home and memorize this. lol

VIDEO: Beastie Boys' "Fight for Your Right Revisited" with Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, and more celebs

According to /Film, the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch, aka MCA, "assembled quite the cast to tell the story of what happens after the epic party in their classic 1987 music video for '(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party).'" The short, Fight For Your Right Revisited, was one of the "most highly anticipated shorts playing at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival." The main cast consists of Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen, and Danny McBride as the Beastie Boys. Later in the video, a Delorean appears with the future versions of the Beastie Boys: Will Ferrell as Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly as Seth Rogen, and Jack Black as Danny McBride. But it doesn't stop there with the cameos. There are also goofy appearances by: Rashida Jones, Will Arnett, Rainn Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, Steve Buscemi, Amy Poehler, Mary Steenburgen (The Proposal), Chloe Sevigny, Kirsten Dunst, Maya Rudolph, David Cross ("Arrested Development"), and Orlando Bloom, in that order. I'm not shocked that so many celebrities are fans of the 80s rap group. I am, however, shocked that so many actors were free to appear in this. lol Nonetheless, it's really cool.

MUSIC/FILM TOPIC: When Soundtracks Top Their Films

I caught a double feature last Thursday and saw When in Rome and Leap Year, knowing that I'd prefer the Irish superstition rom-com over the Italian superstition rom-com (even though I love Rome). What I didn't realize is that I'd leave the theater thinking, "Man, that soundtrack was awesome!" The movie was an insult to Kristen Bell's intelligence and a blemish on her legacy, but the music was totally dance-worthy.

1. Starstrukk (3oh!3 feat Katy Perry)
2. Stupid Love letter (Friday Night Boys)
3. Heart Bling (Sofi Bonde)
4. Kickin' With You (Jason Mraz)
5. Something Beautiful (Need to Breathe)
6. How Far We've Come (Matchbox Twenty)
7. Shine (Laura Izibor)
8. Honey, let me sing you a song (Matt Hires)
9. Hold On To Your Heart (Tina Parol)
10. Fox on the Run (The Academy Is...)
11. Pencil Full of Lead (Paolo Nutini)

MUSIC: Fall Out Boy Breaking Up has Inspired the Creation of My Dream Band

As you may have heard today, Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump, two of the members of Fall Out Boy, announced that the band will be taking a somewhat prolonged break. They were a bit vague, but it seems like they can't agree on the next album, which is understandable, considering that most bands or solo artists always have to reinvent themselves or their sound with every album. Some bands/groups, like Black Eyed Peas and Linkin Park can usually agree on their next metamorphoses, but unfortunately not everybody grows at the same pace or in the same direction. In fact, most bands of our generation have a life expectancy of 5-15 years after they "make it." There are no more Aerosmith's or Bon Jovi's, who are predicted to rock out even after their Social Security check kicks in.

Once they start making babies or one band member gets more attention than another, everything falls apart. With the label-dropping, album-stalling, and general MIA behavior of such bands as Good Charlotte, Maroon 5, Simple Plan, and No Doubt, we're running out of the collective collaborations of awesome musicians and lyricists. Even the Jonas Brothers are "taking a break." While it is true that some bands, like Blink 182, get back together even after public declarations of mutual hatred or animosity, I think this is a prime opportunity for us to encourage the creation of super bands.

On Twitter, Blink 182's Mark Hoppus joked that he was quitting Fall Out Boy, then John Mayer joked that he was replacing him. While those amateur comedians may have only been riffing, it's not such a bad idea...in theory. What if you could mix members from all of your favorite bands and create a super band? I mean, if we don't give them something to do, they'll end waiting for their royalties to run dry before they start pimping themselves out for lame TV show guest spots, film cameos, and reality shows.

Okay so I created my super band, but I would like to first say that I broke some rules in doing so. Some of these artists are solo acts and none of them are strangers to the current Billboard charts.

Singers: Jason Mraz and Haley from Paramore
Guitarists: John Mayer and Orianthi
Piano: Alicia Keys
Drums: Questlove from The Roots
Producer: Timbaland
Songwriter: Kate Nash, Sara Bareilles, and Jesse McCartney
Vibe: Adam Levine from Maroon 5 [his job is to just stand there and stare the crowd down, lol]

Hmm, what should I name it?

VIDEO: Best Performances on "Glee" - Episode 5

The best performance on "Glee" this week had to be the last one of Queen's "Somebody to Love," if only because of Mercedes' solo alto moment, which you can see below:

The runner-up was, Cabaret's "Maybe This Time," the duet between Kristin Chenoweth's character April and Rachel.

Oh and I really wanted to hear more of Will and April's duet of Heart's "Alone":

Which was your favorite?

EVENT: MTV Video Music Awards 2009 Wrap-Up

+ I cringed when I saw that Shakira and Pink were wearing the same mini on the red carpet. But knowing those lovely ladies, they probably didn't care. On a side note, I think Pink wore it better. It matches her personality.+ Madonna's tribute to Michael Jackson was kind of long and self-involved. It was literally an explanation as to why she even has the right to say anything about him and how this affects her. Wow! Get off the stage.

+ I liked that they didn't ask any artists to participate in the tribute because that way no one felt left out. It was just a hoard of talented dancers who totally did Michael justice...except for the one guy who didn't lean forward properly. lol So embarrassing.

+ Everyone was really excited when Janet came on, but there were a few things that seemed a bit off. For starters, she was covered from neck to toe, which isn't very Janet. Then, of course, there was the fact that she wasn't really on-point with the synchronized dance moves, when she was trying to match the video they did together displayed on the monitor behind her. But maybe she was a little nervous because of how much the performance meant to her and the audience. Then again, it could just be the first signs of a dwindling career. The end always seems to officially start with sub-par performances. Just look at past appearances by Britney, Whitney, and even Michael himself.

+ Somehow Taylor Lautner managed to not sound like a spaz when he said: "You know, Shakira, every She Wolf needs a good werewolf." So adorable. lol She would eat you alive.

+ Taylor Swift won an award that Kanye West believed Beyonce deserved. Actually, he believed it so much that he went up on stage, took the microphone from Taylor, and told the whole world, robbing her of her opportunity to accept her first VMA award. Such. a. dick. Actually, Katy Perry said it best on Twitter: "F– you Kanye. It's like u stepped on a kitten."

+ Taylor performed in a train station and a train, then took the show on the road to the front of Radio City. Insane! Coolest location for a concert.

+ Lady Gaga performed and...died on stage. I can't fucking believe it. Quite the metaphor. A very, very vivid metaphor. But not outrageous enough for me to forget that Kanye West is still a dick.

+ Russell Brand made some pervy comment about Megan Fox and the idiot camera man fixated on Katy Perry. They're not interchangeable.

+ Beyonce performed and much like the video (Kanye) it was only good because of the dancing. There wasn't much of a set or an atmosphere. It was kind of lame.

+ The All-American Rejects performed with the house band during the commercial break and the lead singer, Tyson, was shirtless with silver glitter all over his shoulders and neck. I secretly believe this is a mockery of Edward's glittery skin in Twilight. lol

+ The DJ AM tribute was nicely done.

+ When Lady Gaga accepted her New Artist award from Eminem, she was wearing a red-lace mask. I was dying for her to take it off so that she could accept her first award as herself, instead of a fake persona, and BAM she handed her award to Eminem and ripped it off her face to say the best line I've ever heard in a speech: "This is for God and for the gays!" [Oh! And yes, her dress is see-through.]

+ Serena Williams used her introduction of Pink's performance to make light of her major outburst on the tennis court this weekend that cost her the match.

+ Pink's performance was visually the second best of the night. She performed some seriously impressive synchronized aerodynamics. Gaga's was the best.

+ When Jimmy Fallon and Andy Samberg presented, they imitated the sound effects Boys II Men used to make in their songs, and Beyonce joined in from the audience. That was the second coolest thing she did. The first would be giving up the time she would have to accept her Video of the Year award to Taylor Swift so she could have the three minutes of glory she totally earned. GO TAYLOR!

+ During Jay-Z's performance, he throws his Yankee cap into the crowd and whoever caught that is flying high right about now.

+ The sparkly navy blue leggings that Alicia Keys wore during her performance with Jay-Z will most likely be sold out before the end of tomorrow. They just scream New York!

+ Lastly, does anybody know why Lil Mama was on stage with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys at the end of their performance? I mean, their final pose was symmetric like she was supposed to be there, but she never had a microphone. So bizarre.

Great night! Way better than last year!

MUSIC: Jay-Z's "Death of Autotune"

Are you tired of the autotune effect that is often manipulated by T-Pain, Akon, Sean Kingston and most recently Kanye?

Well, apparently Jay-Z has had enough and he's released a track called "D.O.A.," which stands for Death of Autotune. He raps over a big band orchestra to emphasize the importance of constructing diverse beats in the studio. Check out the intro:
"This is anti-autotune / death of the ringtone / this aint for iTunes / this aint for sing-alongs / this is Sinatra at the opera..."
He goes on to complain about commercialism:
"I know we facing a recession / but the music ya'll making / going to make it the Great Depression."
And he even harps on half-assed rappers:
"You rappers singing too much / get back to rap / you T-Paining too much"

The truth though is that the trumpet sounds like it's being murdered. The lyrics might be substantially impressive, but I think it needs a better backbeat. What do you think?

MUSIC: Bands Reuniting: Blink 182, No Doubt, Creed, Limp Bizkit, Sugar Ray

Which band reunion are you most excited about?

Blink 182 - 27%
Creed - 12%
Limp Bizkit - 6%
No Doubt - 23%
Sugar Ray - 4%
None of them should reunite - 31%

Music lovers everywhere chose Blink 182 as the band they want to see reunited. Let's see what they're all up to:

Blink 182
The group took a hiatus after rumors of inner quarrels and some of the members joined other bands. Now they've reunited with promises of a new single and a world tour this summer, and a brand new album due out early next year. The tour will consist of Fall Out Boy and Weezer, and will start July 24th. Angels and Airwaves fans shouldn't fret though. Tom DeLonge intends on keeping his commitments to that band as well with a new album set for 2010.

No Doubt
They've already started making the rounds on daytime and late night television, and this summer they're going on tour with Paramore, The Sounds, Janelle Monáe, Bedouin Soundclash, Katy Perry, and Panic! at the Disco. With a purchase of a ticket, concertgoers are given the entire No Doubt music collection. Expect their new album to hit stores in 2010.

Creed
The band broke up after their third album. So far all the members are returning for a reunion tour this August. The new album has an undetermined date that falls somewhere between August and September. One thing's for certain is that the title reflects everything they've gone through: Full Circle.

Limp Bizkit
After a directing stint (The Education of Charlie Banks and The Longshots), Fred Durst and his band are reuniting because they are "disgusted and bored with the state of heavy popular music." That kind of sets the bar high for them, but they've always been a cocky bunch. The new album, dubbed Hatorade, will come out some time this year, and their North American tour will start in July.

Sugar Ray
The band wasn't exactly broken up as they were piggy-backing off of old tracks for the last 6 years. Their new album hits iTunes July 21st and they've comically named it Music for Cougars.

Most of you didn't actually want any of the bands to reunite, but I'm genuinely excited about No Doubt's return. Here's a list of my favorite tracks/videos:
• "Spiderwebs"
• "Just a Girl"
• "Ex-Girlfriend"
• "Simple Kind of Life"
• "Hella Good"
• "Hey Baby"
• "Underneath It All"

and the #1 song in my heart: "Don't Speak"

MUSIC: Top 50 Global Best Selling Albums

Prefixmag.com posted a list of the Top 50 Global Best Selling Albums and there are a few surprises. Here are the top 20:

1. Coldplay: Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends

2. AC/DC: Black Ice

3. Various Artists: Mamma Mia! The Movie Soundtrack
[The #1 Film Soundtrack! I totally get that. The theatrics of it can be addicting.]

4. Duffy: Rockferry
[Wow! I can't believe Adele beat her out for Best New Artist at the Grammy's if it is a worldwide consensus that she's the #1 female artist of the year. Oh well, at least she won Best Pop Vocal Album.]

5. Metallica: Death Magnetic

6. Leona Lewis: Spirit
[Hmm, maybe if she had better material she would've out-ranked Duffy hands-down.]

7. Amy Winehouse: Back to Black

8. Various Artists: High School Musical 3: Senior Year

9. Lil Wayne: Tha Carter III

10. Rihanna: Good Girl Gone Bad

11. Madonna: Hard Candy

12. Beyonce: I Am...Sasha Fierce

13. P!ink: Funhouse

14. Guns N' Roses: Chinese Democracy

15: Britney Spears: Circus

16. Jack Johnson: Sleep Through The Static

17. Il Divo: The Promise
[That's impressive for their genre.]

18. Taylor Swift: Fearless
[Miley was so close to outranking her. She actually came in at #23. But I think Taylor deserves it. It was definitely her year. She even came in again at #45 with her self-titled album.]

19. Jonas Brothers: A Little Bit Longer
[It still blows my mind every time someone nominates them for Breakout Artist of the Year. I feel like they've been around for so long, they don't even qualify. But I guess when you've been inundated with news about them, the days seem like years. lol They deserve it though, it was an incredibly mature sound considering their fanbase. They actually appear on the charts twice--at #39 with Jonas Brothers.]

20. Various Artists: Camp Rock OST
[See what I mean, inundated. Disney succeeded in creating yet another teen musical cash-cow.]

...and here are few more notables:

30. T.I.: Paper Trail
[Wow! I wonder how Kanye feels about getting outdone by T.I...and I wonder if he'd attribute his success to the fact that he's in prison now.]

31. Kanye West: 808's & Heartbreak

32. Michael Jackson: Thriller (25th Anniversary Edition)
[I can't believe this actually appeared in the top 50. I love me some Michael, but they're re-releases. You could create your own Greatest Hits on iTunes.]

33. Katy Perry: One of The Boys
[This is pretty huge for Katy, but I just wonder if her sophomore album will be able to live up to the hype.]

35. Ne-Yo: Year of The Gentleman
[He's come a long way--made a name for himself that isn't necessarily synonymous with "Usher-clone."]

40. Seal: Soul
[I had no idea he was so popular.]

41. Sugarland: Love On The Inside
[It's only recently that I noticed this Country Rock band. I could've sworn everyone preferred Rascal Flatts, and that the new group Lady Antebellum was skyrocketing to the top.]

44. Dido: Safe Trip Home
[She first brokeout back in 2000 after singing the haunting chorus on Eminem's "Stan" track, and has steadily been climbing back to stardom with her third album.]

46. Chris Brown: Exclusive
[I would've thought he'd place hire, but I guess I imagined his fanbase to be as large as his public persona.]

47. Twilight: Twilight OST
[I'm not even a little surprised. I mean, if Catherine Hardwicke should feel the need to capitalize off of a director's journal--that will most likely blame the studio for all of the film's inadequacies--it's pretty obvious anything connected to the film will sell.]

48. Jason Mraz: We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things
[He totally deserves a higher ranking. He's been flying under the commercial radar for too long. I was a major fan of "I'm Yours" way before he released it on his album and his tracks deserve more recognition.]

49. OneRepublic: Dreaming Out Loud
[There isn't a season of TV that hasn't featured one of their songs, so it's no surprise music lovers have built their album up to top 50 status.

Are there any albums you'd add to the list?
I'd seriously recommend Estelle's Shine.

MUSIC: Katy Perry vs. Kelly Clarkson

I don't really understand what musicians have to gain by leaking a track of themselves singing someone else's upcoming or recently released single. I don't mind when it's the no-name writer of the song who records it and posts how it would've been sung by them. For example, BC Jean wrote Beyonce's hit "If I Were Boy" and Perez posted her rocker version. But I find it odd that an established singer would want to compete with the person they gave the song to. Is it seller's remorse? Is it purely curiosity as to how many people prefer their singing? Or is it jealousy?

I was just as flabbergasted as everyone else was when it was revealed that Jesse McCartney wrote "Bleeding Love"for Leona Lewis, and even though I like his singing, there's no way in hell his version tops hers. So, to me, that just seemed like seller's remorse. Last summer when Miley Cyrus' album dropped, Perez leaked a recording of Katy Perry singing one of the tracks, "Breakout," which she recorded a few years before. Maybe that was all P's doing, but what if we do prefer Katy's version? We can't buy it, so it's sort of a waste of time. He posted it in an effort to determine who sung it better, but again, even if she had, we still can't buy it.

Now he's done the same with a track that's rumored to be on Kelly Clarkson's upcoming comeback album, called "I Do Not Hook Up." Apparently, Katy wrote this song three years ago and recorded a demo, but never released it. Having heard hers first and decided that it's so Katy, it's going to be mighty hard for me to imagine Kelly doing it any better. She doesn't ooze sexuality the same way Katy does--her specialty is ire--so her execution might be a little bit off. I say if you feel you HAVE to leak an alternate version of a song, at least let me hear the official one first. It's like alternate movie endings--they're hardly as substantial as the real ones, but it's nice to know there's another option.

Click here for Katy's version of "I Do Not Hook Up."

Music Topic: PCD's Nicole Digs her Own Grave

I really wanted to give Nicole Scherzinger the benefit of the doubt. I thought she had a tough break--couldn't get her solo album out cause of shotty material, despite her amazing voice--but then I watched the latest Pussycat Dolls video for their single "Watcha Think About That," one of only two songs I liked on the 20-track album. One of the main reasons I liked it so much was because there were two vocals audible on the track, Nicole's and Melody's--finally it feels like a group effort. But somehow in the video Nicole was in 99% of the close-ups and Melody was in the dark with crap-lighting. I'm so not a fan of divas who think their group would never survive if they weren't around....even if it's true. Here's looking at you Aubrey (Danity Kane).

Update: I find Nicole a little less annoying after seeing this video. "I Hate This Part Right Here" is not half bad.

MUSIC: Times Square's Virgin Megastore Closing

Normally I wouldn't report something like this, but aside from the record store on 14th and Broadway, this is the only place I would buy CDs. Now that we are a mp3-loving community, I guess such stores are becoming extinct.

Now what should replace it? I think Apple would make trillions if they erected a post there. The 59th street location (above) is artistic and everything, but Times Square is like an outdoor shopping mall. With a spot right across from TRL and no other music outlets nearby, it would have a perfect advantage.

MUSIC: Madonna Playlist

To take a trip down memory lane, download this playlist and watch her innovative videos for optimum Madonna overload:

Madonna
(1983)
_+"Burning Up"
_+"Holiday"

Like a Virgin (1984)
This was about the time where she started to amp up her sex appeal.
_+"Material Girl"
_+"Like a Virgin": If you care to watch the video, you'll see the inexplicable use of a lion. Grrr. Aargh.
_+"Get into the Groove": She co-wrote this one for her second starring role in Desperately Seeking Susan.
_+"Dress You Up": I never noticed that the lyrics don't make any sense. "I'm going to dress you up in my love." Huh? There's still a catchy beat. (The song starts at about 1:45 into the concert performance.)
_+"Shoo-Bee-Doo": She wrote it all by herself. That in itself is impressive.
_+"Pretender": These days we refer to them as "players." A more untimely term for them is "asshole."

True Blue (1986)
This is the last album she works intensely with one of her two best producers/co-writers, Stephen Bray. While producing it, she married Sean Penn and she suddenly became very worldly, intelligent, and controversial.
_+"Pappa Don't Preach": One of her most controversial videos ever, where she portrays a young girl who refuses to get an abortion.
_+"Open your heart"
_+"White Heat": This reminds me of a squeaky Ashlee Simpson, and I recommend it despite the juvenile lyrics.
_+"Live to Tell": This was a song written for the Sean Penn film At Close Range.
_+"La Isla Bonita": This was her first venture into worldly music, before she would invade India, Japan...and later Africa. lol_+"Jimmy Jimmy": This kind of gives me a "Hey Mickey! You're so fine!" vibe.

Like a Prayer (1989)
She filed for divorce while producing this album. That might explain all the lyrics about expressing yourself and full-on descriptions of what girls deserve and should ask from men. She was then rumored to be dating Warren Beatty after filming Dick Tracy with him. There are two horrible tracks--one that happens to be a duet with Prince. For shame. But this was her very last awesome album, which she did with her other best producer Patrick Leonard.
_+"Like a Prayer": This is another super controversial video that she shot, depicting stigmata, attempted rape, and what appears to be an African American Jesus.
_+"Express Yourself"
_+"Promise to Try": It's an ode to her deceased mom.

Erotica
(1992)
She produced this album after dating a porn star and Vanilla Ice. I'm not sure if that's why it sucked, but it is why it was so heavy in sexual content.

Bedtime Stories
(1994)
In this album she seemed to have tweaked her sound a bit by going for a sensual R&B vibe. The whole album is pretty mellow.
_+"Human Nature": I like the whispering in the background.
_+"Take a bow": This was actually one of her best ballads--which is saying a lot since she's not known for them.

Ray of Light (1998)
She produced this two years after starring in the critically acclaimed Evita and giving birth to her daughter Lourdes, and one year after getting divorced from her second husband. It's almost as if she were enlightened by the beauty of motherhood. She also immerses herself into Japanese and Indian culture.
_+"Nothing Really Matters":
_+"Frozen"
_+"The Power of Good-Bye"

Music (2000)
She produced this pro-America album when she started dating British director Guy Ritchie and gave birth to her second child Rocco. It veers off her spiritual quest, coincidentally one year after the Princess of Pop, Britney Spears, burst onto the scene. It's also the first time she gets super buff.
_+"Music"
_+"Don't Tell Me"
_+"What it feels like for a girl": It's like a PSA for why girls should know they're awesome.
_+"American Pie"

American Life (2003)
She released this album one year after she was railroaded for her performance in Swept Away and two years after marrying Ritchie. It seems while under the Brit-influence and film criticism, she grew tired of Hollywood's bullshit and released this anti-American album. Unfortunately, she also raps into two songs ("American Life" and "Mother and Father") and reminds us why she should stay a pop star.
_+"Hollywood": Here she tears the media a new one.
_+"Intervention": This is a sweet love song about enduring love's trials.
_+"X-Static Process": Here's an acoustic rendition of this track, where she expresses how it feels to have an identity crisis.
_+"Die Another Day": This is her contribution to the Bond saga.

Confessions of a Dance Floor (2005)
I’m not sure why I’ve always thought of Madonna as a dance diva, but this is actually her first dance album--however, she’s always been physical in her videos and on the stage. In this album, she shows her appreciation for the 80s b-boy and starts the pop-hip hop phase of her career, while bringing back the unitard and Farrah Fawcett hair.
_+"Hung Up"
_+"Sorry"

Honorable Mention: "Vogue" was on the Dick Tracy soundtrack, but it deserves to be downloaded nonetheless.

MUSIC: No debut album for Nicole Scherzinger?

I just heard another single off of Nicole Scherzinger's debut album, Her Name is Nicole. The album itself has been pushed back so many times, it's already been designated a failure. I've actually heard four singles off the album and "Rio" is the fifth. I think what her publicity team was trying to do is find a track that would launch the album and put it on the charts, but none of the singles have been remotely popular.

The first, released in July, was “Whatever U Like” featuring T.I., which I actually enjoyed because of the tempo. It was the type of club song that the Pussycat Dolls would've released, so it should've been a hit. But the highest it got on the Billboard charts was 88. Listen to see if you would've downloaded it:

Then there was single #2 “Baby Love” released in September, written and produced by will.i.am. It was a sweet song, but nobody thinks "sweet" when they think of Nicole, so it was sort of out of character. The 3rd single was “Super Villain” featuring Mad Scientist, who also produced it. It isn't bad. It's a playful song that could've had a graphically killer video, but it was buried after its November release. Then she topped off 2007 with the sexually suggestive Hawaiian-infused "Puakenikeni" in December, a song written by and featuring Brick & Lace. The beat is hot, but her this track, along with the other three, seem more like summer singles, not holiday season playlist material.

The only tracks that I'd completely skip are surprisingly ones produced by Timbaland and Ne-Yo. On "Physical," Timbaland and Nicole start sounding like horses neighing. I realize they're going for that over-the-top 80s Vanity 6 feel, but it just sounds ridiculous in 2008. As for Ne-Yo's “Happily Never After,” I've heard better ballads come out of him. This one sounds like a Disney song and girls who dance seductively in music videos surrounded by fire shouldn't sing Disney songs. There was only one track, "Just Say Yes," that she sings with Snow Patrol that I couldn't get my hands on. But I choose to be optimistic that it'll be better than her latest release "Rio," which is actually a Brazilian remake of a Duran Duran song that she did for a Caress Brazilian product promotion, that is really really cheesy. If you dare to listen:

So what do you think? Will she ever release her debut album? Should she even bother trying?

MUSIC: Update your Playlist with these tracks...

Here's an "If..then" game. If you liked a hit single from one of these new artists, then I suggest you download these tracks and update your iPod.

If you liked Ingrid Michaelson's "The Way I am," then download these tracks from her album Girls and Boys for their ability to capture non-generic, feminine, romantic emotions:
+ "Starting Now"
+ "Far Away"

If you liked Sara Bareilles's "Love Song," then download these tracks from her album Little Voice:
+ "Bottle it up": She admitted that her first single was about the record companies demanding a romantic hit and if you listen to this song it seems like the record companies were really breathing down her neck. I love it when singers sing about what they know, and when she says, "There’ll be girls across the nation that will eat this up/Babe I know that it’s your soul/but could you bottle it up?," I feel like she really captures what it feels like to be constantly asked to be a product instead of an artist, but not in that "woe is me" kind of way.
+ "Vegas": An indie blues song about thinking a new location will help you achieve your goals.
+ "Many the Miles": More and more often, Sara is reminding me of a female John Mayer, especially with this song production-wise.
+ "Come round soon": This one sounds like something Maroon 5 fans would appreciate.
You also might want to try: "Morningside," "Love on the rocks," and "Gravity."

If you liked Kate Voegele when she guest-starred on the CW's "One Tree Hill," then you might enjoy these hope-filled tracks from her album Don't Look Away:
+ "It's only life"
+ "I get it": This would be the first time I've heard a fire in her voice that shows she has Kelly Clarkson-pop/rock potential.
+ "Only fooling myself"

If you liked Brit-import Kate Nash's mischievous "Foundations," then you might want to try these tracks off of her album Made of Bricks:
+ "Shit song": If you happen to be pissed at someone right now, this would be the song to blast. "Darlin' don't give me shit/cause I know that you're full of it."
+ "Mouthwash": This is sort of her declaration song where she has a roundabout way of defining who she is and stating that she refuses to be anyone else.
+ "Pumpkin soup": This is one of a few songs on her album that has a sort of hip hop backbeat, while still sounding like indie pop.

If you liked the band OneRepublic's "Apologize" and "Stop and Stare," then you might want to try these other Snow Patrol-type epic ballads off their album Dreaming Out Loud:
+ "Mercy"
+ "All We Are"

MUSIC: Amerie, Chingy, Nelly Comebacks

Rapper Chingy is returning with a 4th album Hate it or Love It and he has Amerie singing the chorus on his first single "Fly like me." Amerie hasn't quite made it in her pursuits to be as famous as Beyonce or even Rihanna. Appearing on this track is sort of like pre-press for her next album, Because I love it, debuting later this year. Give a listen to their new track and see if they were right to make a comeback or if they're best to be forgotten:

Nelly's taking the Amerie-route to getting back on the wagon, appearing on a remix of Chris Brown's already top-charted track "Kiss Kiss." His new album, Brass Knuckles, comes out Dec. 11th. Although he's released 4 tracks from the album, none of them have become radio hits. Hopefully the collaborations he has with Akon and T.I. will help him out in the future. Until then, check out his contribution:

MUSIC: American Music Awards' performances

There were a few surprising performances at the American Music Awards last night--and I'm not just talking about the Sugarland and Beyonce duet of "Irreplaceable." Chris Brown's robot break dancing was cool, but I was more shocked by Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas' performance of a track off his new album, Songs about Girls. I wasn't a fan of any of the tracks until I watched him perform "Heartbreaker." The song is really catchy, watch for yourself below:

Alicia Keys chose to mix it up, melding her "No One" single with surprise appearances from a few Reggae and Dancehall masters, Beanie Man ("Girls Dem Sugar"), Junior Reid (“One Blood"), and Chakademus and the Pliers ("Murder She Wrote"). Sean Kingston and Akon were loving it so much, they jumped up to dance in front of their seats. Watch below:

Mary J. Blige also got a standing ovation when she sang her new single "Just Fine." There were no tricks or gimmicks. Just Mary singing her heart out. Suddenly I realized that she was rocking the Rihanna haircut that has become as famous as The Rachel that Jennifer Anniston had in Friends. But I guess Rihanna didn't mind since she was dancing and singing along to Mary's song. Will.i.am also sang along while sitting next to Fergie, and Nicole Scherzinger gave her a standing-O. And even though American Idol contestants Carrie Underwood and Daughtry were the biggest winners of the night, the Jonas Brothers were the ones who got mauled by preteens who jumped on the stage seconds after their performance was over. I guess they weren't at all stunted by the glass on the stage floor that made Joe Jonas trip and slide down the short ramp.

Rihanna and Neyo's duet was perfectly executed, but I was too busy staring at her beautiful golden flapper dress the whole time:

On other fashion news, Maroon 5's main main Adam Levine sported a shaved head and Ashanti's yellow dress was one of the best of the night.

In spite of the writer's strike, Jimmy Kimmel held his own, making up stuff on the fly. He actually got Kellie Pickler and Jordin Sparks to come up on stage and dance the Superman with him aided by Soulja Boy himself.

MUSIC: Maroon 5 @ Madison Square Garden

Wednesday night Maroon 5 hit NYC in a big way, performing at Madison Square Garden for the first time. Their opening acts were Sara Bareilles and The Hives. Bareilles was a surprising treat. I felt as though I'd heard her songs before, and it turns out ABC's "Men in Trees" have nabbed her "Love Song" for the commercial teasers, possibly sky-rocketing her career as it did KT Tunstall ("Suddenly I See") and Corrinne Bailey Rae's ("Put your records on") last season. She has an amazing voice, not to mention lyrics that speak of unchartered romantic territory. As for The Hives, even though Pelle Almqvist, the lead singer, was very confident that by the end of their performance we'd all be in love with them, I was a tad underwhelmed. I could barely hear what he was saying and most of the musical compositions sounded the same. But at least they go down in history as the first Swedish band to play at MSG.

Now on to the headliners. I was sort of gently bullied into going to this concert. I don't really like Maroon 5's new record, It won't be soon before long--and not just because of the title. However, when my friend gave me Songs about Jane in 2003, I fell in love with every song--which I don't do often. So I expected to daydream through all the crappy songs and leap out of my seat when a Songs about Jane track came on. Silly me. I've only been to two concerts in my life, for The Roots and Sugarcult. I'm not experienced enough to know that when a band goes on tour directly after they've released an album, they usually play favorites, since most people aren't used to the new songs. Lucky me. I, literally, sang every friggin song they played, especially: "Makes me wonder," "Sunday Morning," and "Secret" (below):
Plus, I learned a couple things about Adam Levine:
1) He can play the guitar. I'm used to seeing him strut on a stage.
2) He likes to kid around. A woman threw her bra on the stage and he publicly and verbally examined it to see if it was worn to the arena or purchased on the way there. He believes that only a true fan would take off the bra they're actually wearing. (She did.)
3) His favorite song off the new album is "Won't go home without you."
5) He enjoys mixing the band's songs with oldies, like--if I'm not mistaken--the "Miami Vice" theme song.

Besides getting to know Levine, I was also very excited to have gotten the chance to witness a guest appearance by Kanye West, singing "Heard 'em say," and really entertained when Levine led two "vocal lessons" where he'd sing a note and then instruct the crowd to echo him. During the end of the 2nd vocal lesson, he sang so high and so fast that we couldn't follow him anymore and he just started laughing. It shows he's having fun, which oddly made me have even more fun.

I definitely recommend a Maroon 5 concert if they swing by your neighborhood. And if you're strapped for cash, buy a cheap seat, then crash one closer to the stage--like I did--for a supreme view.
