TV: Best New TV Characters of 2010

Jimmy on "Boardwalk Empire"
Why he's awesome: Every time something bad happens, whether it's to him or around him, you can tell when his heart is breaking by the look on his face. He's the most emotive character on the series. While most people express fear or triumph, Jimmy runs through an entire spectrum of emotions in the span of one episode—going from playing with his adorable son to organizing the hit of an enemy to mourning the death of a lover. If he didn't have such a big heart, he'd already be a lost soul. Thankfully, unlike the other gangsters around him, Jimmy always has his conscience to contend with at the end of the day. And he punishes himself as much as he punishes his enemies.
Best Scene: There are a lot, but one of my favorites is when he realizes that Capone's son is deaf and that's why he doesn't respond when called. He felt for Capone, knew the kind of pain he must feel to discover something so tragic, and, despite their differences, commiserated with him with just one look.
What's up next for him: He's planning a coup against Nucky with Eli and the Commodore.

Harrow on "Boardwalk Empire"
Why he's awesome: The guy loses half his face in war and feels like he has no place in the world, then Jimmy comes along and gives him a purpose in life. Sure, he's a murderer-for-hire, but at least he's nice to the kids.
Best Scene: When Margaret is reading the kids a bedtime story that'll make them unafraid of him and he sits there desperately basking in their acceptance.

Sam on "Rookie Blue"
Why he's awesome: He's the bad boy who lives to do good. He may bust your balls, rile you up, and keep you at arm's length, but he's actually the best friend you could ever have and the nicest guy you could ever meet.
Best Scene: Basically whenever he talks/argues with Andy.

Fauxlivia on "Fringe"
Why she's awesome: She managed to infiltrate Olivia's inner circle, seduce Peter, and complete her mission successfully. She's a relentless soldier and her greatest enemy is a woman who looks exactly like her. How does she reconcile with basically destroying herself? The subtle differences between her and Olivia are just enough to make them seem like polar opposites. It's an amazing performance. And the most amazing part of it is that I never thought Anna Torv could be interesting.
Best Scene: When she tried to get Peter to think that she really did love him and he shuts her down—hard. But then you get the feeling that she might've been telling the truth.

Alex on "Nikita"
Why she's awesome: Lyndsy Fonseca was once known for being hot. Hot enough to be a superhero's object of obsession. But now she's known for being a butt-kicking badass. In the beginning, Alex had the daunting task of having to fool Division and us, and she pulled it off impressively. She's a self-contained nuclear bomb waiting to explode and the only thing keeping her in check is the promise that one day she'll get her revenge.
Best Scene: When she couldn't execute a target, she really struggled with deciding whether or not she'd kill just to get vengeance.
What's up next for her: She'll be moving into her own apartment and getting a new love interest, played by soap star Thad Luckinbill, on Jan. 27th.

Dano on "Hawaii Five-O"
Why he's awesome: He's the show's comic relief, cracking most of the jokes and busting McGarrett's chops. He's also our connection to the other states of America that aren't accustomed to 24/7 beaches-and-bikinis, so he asks all the questions we're thinking and makes all the judgments that are normally taboo to say out loud.
Best Scene: Any where McGarrett almost gets him killed, causing him to rant and complain.
What's up next for him: In February, we're going to meet his brother, who will be played by comedian Dane Cook.

Auggie on "Covert Affairs"
Why he's awesome: He's blind, but he's still a better agent than most. Plus, he helps Annie a lot more than he's supposed to and he doesn't ask for anything in return. Christopher Gorham finally found a role where he can be a nerd and a hottie at the same time.
Best Scene: When he taught Annie how to fight better against men who are bigger than her and when he uses his blindness to make girls putty in his hands.

Manmeet on "Outsourced"
Why he's awesome: Maybe it's his adorable voice or the innocently perverted way he smiles and sways his head whenever he thinks he's said something clever. Or maybe it's the fact that even though he's from another country, he reminds us of that dorky Casanova who's all talk.
Best Scene: One of Tonya's friends comes on to him, practically giving it away, and the only way he can flirt back with her is if he calls her on the phone...while they're in the same room.

Raylan Givens on "Justified"
Why he's awesome: Besides the fact that he's a modern day cowboy with a hot accent, he's also a country knight-and-shining-armor, constantly saving women, whether they're a murderess or his remarried ex-wife. He's got daddy issues galore, but that never stops him from enforcing the law and cleaning up a corrupt town.
Best Scene: Whenever he's in a gun standoff and ends up the quickest draw.

Jim Longworth on "The Glades"
Why he's awesome: He's one of those charismatic know-it-all cops that toys with you to keep you off guard while he solves the case in a cinch. And when he's not putting the bad guys away, he's romancing a nurse and playing surrogate dad to her son.
Best Scene: The day after he kisses Callie for the first time, he's fixing his car, covered in grease, and she strolls up to him and lays one on him so that she can finally stop thinking about him. It leaves him dumbstruck and, for the first time, at a loss for words.
What's up next for him: Since Callie's husband is getting out of jail, I'm assuming there will be a lot of awkwardness in his future.

The Watcher on "No Ordinary Family"
Why he's awesome: He's currently one of the best villains on the tube, boasting not only a mysterious air about him but a dual personality. One minute he's the doting, protective new boyfriend, and the next he's the superpower-addicted strongman for the mad scientist. All the best villains have an inner battle between good and evil, and he makes you want to see which side will win.
Best Scene: When he went to interrogate Daphne and he seemed to plead with her to tell him the truth, desperate to keep his powers.

A on "Pretty Little Liars"
Why she's awesome: Never have I seen a more sadistic teenager. Trust me, that's hard. I watch "Gossip Girl." I thought wealthy, bored upper-east siders were formidable enemies, but this suburban sociopath really takes the cake. Whoever is pretending to be her is always one step ahead, always has a punishment or terrifying incident awaiting them. She's worse than a horror movie villain, because no one would ever suspect her.
Best Scene: The events that led her to framing Toby, and turning everyone, including his only friend, against him.

Brittany on "Glee"
Why she's awesome: Heather Morris was originally supposed to be one of the background characters, but her deadpan delivery of so many dimwitted or bizarre lines scored her a role that was more front-and-center. For a dancer-turned-actress, it was well-deserved and well-acted.
Best Scene: She went to see Santa, and even though he was black, she assumed it was just because of global warming.

Franklin on "True Blood"
Why he's awesome: Vampires stopped being scary on the series right around the time Eric tried to seduce Sookie in the buff. Franklin really reintroduced that unwanted stalker vibe that they usually give off by haunting Tara, torturing her, and imprisoning her as her future vampire wife.
Best Scene: Anytime he fell for Tara's lies about being in love with him and then threw tantrums like some crazed, lovesick sociopath.

Casey on "Better With You"
Why he's awesome: Hands-down, he's the best part of the entire show. He gets the best jokes and he's the most relatable character in the cast. The rest of them are just neurotic.
Best Scene: When he was competing against his mother-in-law to finish a puzzle.

Oscar on "90210"
Why he's awesome: Normally when a guy tricks a girl and her mother into sleeping with him in order to get vengeance against the mother, you think of him as a douchebag. But Oscar carries himself in a way that makes you realize he's damaged. You can't hate a damaged person. It's the reason he saw a kindred spirit in Naomi, someone almost as damaged as he is.
Best Scene: Whenever you could tell he was scheming, setting up Dixon and playing mind games with Ivy.

Derrick Bond on "The Good Wife"
Why he's awesome: Unlike the other lawyers in the firm, he doesn't let his emotions control his decisions. He seems like he has a preset plan and that nothing will make him veer away from it. But you get the feeling that that plan is a secret, which would make him the most devious one of them all.
Best Scene: Whenever he goes head-to-head with Diane and Will, and overrides their authority—shoulders back, head high, and full of self-righteousness.
What's up next for him: I imagine he'll be busy with Diane's departure, especially if she convinces Alicia to go with her.

Paul on "30 Rock"
Why he's awesome: It's hard to be funny when you're playing a straight transvestite that's in love with a woman that you dress up as, especially if that woman is Jenna. But somehow Will Forte pulls it off. Now, I'm not going to say that he's an attractive tranny, but he certainly looks comfortable in his own skin.
Best Scene: It had to be when he was half Cher and half Jenna. So disturbing and yet so funny.
What's up next for him: He'll try to have a normal relationship with Jenna and get her to commit.

MUSIC: Best Albums of 2010

The days of buying entire albums are over, but sometimes you find a record that's actually worth it. Here are my top 5 favorite of the year:

Kings of Leon's Come Around Sundown
This is my new favorite band of the year. Their latest offering dives deeper into the blues genre, with gut-wrenching vocals and melodic intensity. I love most of the songs because of lead singer Caleb Followill's voice. I get lost in its vibrations and fail to even remember to listen to the lyrics.

KT Tunstall's Tiger Suit
After listening to all 11 songs off her new album Tiger Suit, I realized that Ms. Tunstall has got a little more fire in her than she's commercially let on. I'm liking the less bubbly side of KT. There are still plenty of up-tempo tunes on the album, but most of the tracks have a more intense, bluesy, tribal, drum-and-chant driven melody.

Natasha Bedingfield's Strip Me
This British popstar has successfully released a catchy single with every new album, but how she's managed to stay afloat, unlike her brother Daniel, is beyond me. Considering that most music is about sex and vanity, her uplifting, self-esteem boosting, and romantic songs should fall by the wayside. Luckily, this album is chocked full of them and they're as catchy as ever.

Hanson's Shout It Out
This is the first year that I heard an entire Hanson album. I was pleasantly surprised to hear traces of Jonas Brothers, Robin Thicke, Jason Mraz, Michael Buble, Maroon 5, Rob Thomas, and Gavin DeGraw. The boys are definitely grown up, and still incredibly talented.

Bruno Mars's Doo-Wops & Hooligans
I didn't think he had the ability to construct an album that didn't have just one repetitive pop sound. What encouraged me to try it was the album's hilarious first single, an overly dramatic and hyperbolic declaration of love called "Grenade." Intrigued, I conducted a more thorough investigation and discovered an entire library of genres, where he seduced like Robin Thicke, goofed around like the Lonely Planet comedy troupe, and romanced like a lovestruck teenager.

Honorable Mentions: Travie McCoy's break-up album Lazarus and Weezer's anti-establishment, lyrically awesome, rock album Hurley.

MUSIC: The Best Music Videos of 2010

I HATE when the VMAs give out the Video of the Year award. They always give it to the song with the most airplay, not the song with the best video. LAME! Especially considering how awesome some videos truly are. Here are the best of the year by category:

BEST IDEA/DESIGN
• "We Used to Wait" - Arcade Fire
Ok so when the album first came out, true Arcade Fire fans went to their website and got to experience something hella cool. They entered their address and then a video was automatically generated to incorporate aerial and land views of their neighborhood. The character in the video was concealed enough for the viewer to consider it their avatar. So in the end, it was like each fan had their very own music video. There's a sample below, but if you want to make one for yourself, I should warn you that it'll generate several pop ups that bleed into each other all over your screen.

• "Why Don't You Love MeBeyonce
The chocolate diva went back in time to channel the underappreciated housewife who did it all and never got enough in return. It's practically Betty Draper's anthem.

• "CousinsVampire Weekend
The ingenuity that went into thiscreating a trolley track in an alley way, drawing all over the walls and ground, synchronizing motions, confetti canons, and loads of instrumentsis just astounding.

• "Just the Way You AreBruno Mars
Do you remember, way back when, when your cassette tape use to malfunction and the film would get tangled or wrinkled? It used to be a bitch. Who knew you could use it to construct images that look like an etch-a-sketch drawing with unbroken lines?

• "King of Anything" Sara Bareilles
There have been plenty of videos in music history that have manipulated still photography, but Sara really takes it to the next level, never diverting from the theme.

• "Nothin on YouB.o.B. feat. Bruno Mars
It's like a cut-out stop motion production.

• "LocaShakira ft. El Cata
With that title, one expects something crazy. But stripping in the street, jumping on a biker's motorcycle, and rolling around on concrete? That's way better than a fitted straight jacket and a padded room.

• "WTF?Ok Go
Even if you've never heard an Ok Go album, you know they've got awesome videos. This one is just a potheads playground.

BEST PLOT
• "Na Na Na" & "SINGMy Chemical Romance
This is above and beyond the call of duty. The band has its own comic book and this is the live action version of it. Come on?

• "Tighten Up" The Black Keys
Puppy love at its grandest. It starts off super sweet right up until the 2:15 mark, and then they start behaving exactly like you'd expect boys to. As do their fathers.

• "Cuando Me EnamoroEnrique Iglesias feat. Juan Luis Guerra
Enrique chose to uncharacteristically not molest a stranger in this video, but to instead cast a group of kids to tell little stories of young love. So adorable.

• "Round & Round" - Selena Gomez
Um, so put the song on mute, and watch the Disney star audition for a spy movie.

BEST MESSAGE
• "Un-thinkableAlicia Keys
This video didn't get as much TV-play as her other single, but I think it deserved to. It goes through 6 decades, showing the evolution, or lack there of, of her biracial romance with Chad Michael Murray ("One Tree Hill"), complete with little details that signify the decade. In the 50s, he had a pompadour and she had a beehive. In the 60s, he was a prep and she had colorful jewelry. In the 70s, he had a shag/mullet and she had an afro. In the 80s, she was sporting a makeshift Jheri curl and her friends were playing cassette tapes. In the 90s, she was using CDs and giant cell phones, and they both had leather jackets. And in the 00s, she had a touchscreen mp3 player and, most importantly, a backbone.

• "FireworkKaty Perry
She managed to cover a lot of bases in the self-esteem arena, telling chubby girls to love their bodies, gays to come out of the closet, and Cancer patients to have hope, and she does it with a party vibe.

• "No LoveEminem feat. Lil Wayne
These gentlemen are known for their controversial lyrics, but they surprisingly teamed up and created this anti-bullying video. No promotion of violence, just an encouragement to stand up for yourself. That is rarely the rapper agenda.

• "Window SeatErykah Badu
Everyone pretty much flipped out when they heard she stripped down in the middle of the street without warning, permission, or guards. The meaning behind it, however, was apparently lost on the small-minded. Badu says she was inspired by the indie rock duo Matt & Kim's video for "Lessons Learned." She thought it was the perfect example of bravery and liberation. Stripping down was her way of showing her true self. And when she gets shot at the end, in a way assassinated, it's suppose to represent society's rejection of the true self and the reassertion of conformity. While it's basically the same video as M&K's, including the surprising death at the end, it's a little braver than theirs because 1) she did it on her own and 2) she didn't get a permit under the guise of shooting a commercial, so she really could've been arrested.

BEST TWIST ENDING
• "Say You Don't Want It" - One Night Only feat. Emma Watson
I admit I only watched this video because a Harry Potter actress was in it, but I was pleasantly surprised at the end. It starts off seeming like a romance, where the guy is trying to woo the girl, but at the end (3:35) all of their bizarro behavior suddenly makes sense...they're actually smitten puppies. Altogether now: Awww!

• "Grenade" - Bruno Mars
I like this song, but the video is incredibly boring until the 3:30 mark. I would not advise doing this, but it definitely wakes you up.

BEST CASTS
• "Erase Me" Kid Cudi feat. Kanye West
Clark Duke and Christopher Mintz-Plasse play his British rock band mates, complete with rockstar attitudes and star-f*cking groupies.

• "Memories" Weezer
The boys of Jackass fool around and dangerously skate within an empty pool. Non-Jackass lovers are unaware of how much brotherly love runs through this clan, but you really get that feeling watching this video.

• "Giving Up the Gun" Vampire Weekend
Let's see. Joe Jonas as a sore loser. A drunk, overly confident Jake Gyllenhaal. Rapper RZA dressed like he's auditioning for The Matrix while refereeing the tennis match. And, last but not least, the randomest of the random, rapper Lil Jon as a coach dressed in preppy clothes.

• "Stylo" Gorillaz
This badass animated band managed to get Bruce Willis in their video as a littering, aviator-wearing, gun-toting speed demon!!

BEST CHOREOGRAPHY
• "In the Sun" She & Him
I may not love the duo or even this song, but I'd like to congratulate Zooey Deschanel for being one of very few indie artists who not only dances in their videos, but dances well. No, Feist doesn't count.

• "Thinkin' Bout Something" Hanson
The boys ingeniously recreated a scene in The Blues Brothers and Weird Al Yankovic guest stars too. This is the coolest the boys have ever been.

MUSIC: Best Album Covers of 2010

Now that we have iPods and various other forms of digital media, we rarely see album covers. That's why I like to acknowledge the best ones every year, because I like to see how creative bands (and/or their record companies) can be.

The Black Eyed Peas - The Beginning
The Peas like to reinvent themselves with every album—always a party vibe, but never the same visual style. This time around they were going for a more video game aesthetic: pixelated, lego-like, and malleable. Aside from the fact that Fergie looks...more like Barbie than Fergie, I like their dedication to the new theme.
Brian Wilson - Reimagines Gershwin
I...don't know who Brian Wilson is, but I like that as the piano keys begin to separate and come apart, they not only get bigger but become colorful. It's like a metaphor for what the customer can look forward to: bland and conservative music is transformed into untamed and revitalized sounds. Of course I am assuming this because again, I have never heard his music. However, the cover is subtly enticing enough to attract a skimming eye.

Bruno Mars - Doo-Wops & Hooligans
Most new artists put their face on the cover and self-title it. I like that Bruno got artistic with it. It looks like a yellow brick road and a rocket—both symbols of a journey towards something great.

Weezer - Hurley
So the basic story behind the photo of Jorge Garcia is that band leader Rivers Cuomo took a photo with the "Lost" star and liked his mug so much that instead of just showing the band and naming it after themselves for a fourth time, they would use a random backstage photo and name it after his character. Now you could say they were using the series's fame to promote their album, implying that secrets to the series's ending lied within their lyrics since Hugo was left in charge of the island, but I just think it's funny that they didn't even get a professional photo of Jorge. They just slapped his lovable teddy bear mug on an album and called it Hurley. Genius? Maybe. Funny? Definitely. Why? Because there's nothing cuddly about this rock album.

James Blunt - Some Kind of Trouble
Again, I don't listen to James Blunt. Mainly because his voice annoys me. But who can resist a baby photo? Especially one where the baby is being thrown up in the air? I use to LOVE that as a kid. It was like I was flying.

Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager
Self-portraits are hard to make artistic on an album cover. It usually veers towards the vain, especially with pop singers—I'm looking at you Mariah. I like this though. The lighting makes it look like he's in black-and-white and the rest of the world is in color. Then there's the added bonus of the distressed look, worn lines on the surface, which emphasize the title's allusion to an old tale. Plus, with the mention of a Man on the Moon, you'd think he'd do something a little more space-agey, but instead he does something far more subtle, adding stars as a backdrop, like a halo.

MercyMe - The Generous Mr. Lovewell
Once again, I've never heard MercyMe's music, but this cover reminded me of that Magritte self-portrait that has a guy in a bowler hat with a green apple in front of his face. Granted, none of that is happening on this cover, but in the moment, that's what it reminded me of. I also liked that it looked like paper pop-ups—like an etsy design.
Robyn - Body Talk
At first glance, this kind of looks like Robyn stuck a bunch of post-its onto her body—not that I would put it past her—but after further examination it would appear that through computer manipulation, she's managed to isolate square-sized portions of the image to move them off kilter a bit into like a sculpted Monet. I specifically like the layers of square mouths—sort of saying that her voice is three dimensional and there are many layers to her music and her sound.

Take That - Progress
Not a fan, BUT I have this job where I have to find creative ways to illustrate the topic of an article. That's what this band's done with the title of their album. How do you show "progress"? They went the route of evolution, which apparently, by their theory, will go from walking to flying. The image itself was actually photographed, not drawn, by Nadav Kander, who also photographed President Barack Obama.

The Chemical Brothers - Further
Heard of them, but never heard them. This cover, however, is one of many underwater covers that exist in music history. Unlike many others, though, the focus isn't on the fact that something is underwater, but on the water itself. It's like she is manifesting from the water, like it's apart of her. Plus, it's also a great illustration of the title.

FILM/TV NEWS: Wachowski's Take On Robin Hood, "Glee" Star Might Be New Buffy, and more

• The Wachowski brothers are interested in making a contemporary version of Robin Hood. When I heard that, I thought, "A contemporary Robin Hood is basically a thief…or Nate Ford in TNT's 'Leverage.'" Then I read they've had talks with Will Smith. Ah, so that kind of modernization.

Taylor Lautner has signed onto the dystopian fantasy thriller Incarceron. He'll play a futuristic prisoner who finds a crystal key that allows him to communicate with the warden's daughter, who is being forced into an arranged marriage in the outside world that resembles the 17th century. Together, they'll figure out how to escape both their fates. If that girl Hailee Seinfeld wasn't 14, I'd say she was perfect for this. But maybe Nina Dobrev ("Vampire Diaries") or Emma Watson would do.

• In order to reinvent himself, I'm sure, Zac Efron has signed on for his first douchebag role. In Die in a Gunfight, he'll play a fight-prone, death-obsessed socialite who tries to court his father's enemy's daughter. Sounds like a role that would've been perfect for Bradley Cooper, if he was 10 years younger.

• I just finished listening to the audiobooks for The Hunger Games last week, and after getting a gist of the main character and her two love interests, I think I might agree with the director who is reportedly against casting a well-known actress in the lead. He's aiming for an unknown. I think it might be easier to focus on the storyline if a newcomer is at the forefront. Plus, they're more likely to be free for sequels than an up-and-comer with a million projects pending. However, the love interests shouldn't be newcomers unless they're as mesmerizing and charismatic as Robert Pattinson, Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson), or Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) from the very start. My vote's for the relatively new Thomas McDonell (above), who'll make his film debut as a rebel this April in the teen dramedy Prom.

Chris Colfer ("Glee") wrote and intends on starring in the "John Hughes-esque coming-of-age comedy" Struck by Lightning. Who knew he even had ambitions to write?

• Another "Glee" alum, Heather Morris (Brittany, left), is supposedly the "favorite" to star in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer remake. As if a remake isn't bad enough, they hire a girl with no action background. Okay fine, technically Buffy started off as a blonde cheerleader without a clue, and Brittany screams ALL of that, but it's mighty hard to believe that Morris will ever grow to be the formidable heroine that Sarah Michelle Gellar did. I mean, if you HAVE to hire a former cheerleader, than why not Alyson Michalka ("Hellcats").

• I love True Lies and, 15 years later, the film still holds up as an awesome action movie, so I totally get why they'd want to adapt it for TV. Especially, since NBC's "Undercovers" bombed and the plans for a "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" series has been delayed ever since the film came out five years ago. But casting might be the death of the series before it even premieres. There's talk of wrestler John Cena playing the Arnold Schwarzenegger role. While technically, they have a smilar body build, that role wasn't about being a meathead. And by then Arnold knew how to act. Cena has barely mastered that, and even if he did, I don't really care. Don't ruin one of my favorite spy films by choosing a former wrestler.

TV NEWS
• The next season of "The Closer" is reported to be its last. It's hard to believe it's been 5 years, but that's one of the best female-led shows I've ever seen. I'll miss Brenda Leigh and Co.

• In AWESOME TV news, Enver Gjokaj (left), the true breakout star of "Dollhouse," has scored a USA network pilot, which means he's as good as full-time employed. USA shows never get canceled. He'll costar with Nicholas D'Agosto ("Heroes" and Fired Up!) in the drama "Eden," which will be set in an NYC hotel. I would prefer him joining "Nikita" or livening up "Covert Affairs," but I guess this will do for now.

• I must say I am truly intrigued by the news that The Counte of Monte Cristo is being modernized for television. It'll be set in present day Hamptons and the lead will be changed to a woman. Now, if you don't know the story, it's about a man whose best friend frames him for a crime, gets him locked in jail, then steals his wife and kid. Hell bent on vengeance, he escapes from the prison with the help of a fellow old inmate who knows the location of a vast treasure. Once he's out, he finds the treasure and uses it to create a new identity where he's a mysterious Count. He squeezes himself back into his enemy's life and manages to steal back his wife and son, and, if I'm not mistaken, leaves him penniless. So, if they were to recreate this story from a modern day woman's perspective, then it could be safe to assume that this woman has reinvented herself so that she can get back the man she loves. I'm sold.

TRAILER: Seth Rogen's "Green Hornet" vs. Ryan Reynolds's "Green Lantern"

I know that Seth Rogen literally worked his butt off in order to be fit enough to play a superhero, but after so many setbacksfrom flaky directors to casting issuesand his plan for it to be more Dark Knight than Iron Man, I didn't have much confidence that it would be very good. I thought it would fall flatter than Watchmen, and barely make enough to cover the budget. I had higher hopes for Green Lantern. I thought it was a no-brainer. Spandex? Check! Unforeseen destiny thrusted upon an athletically built rebel? Check! A handsome and charming protagonist? Check! It was perfect. Then I watched both trailers and was very surprised as to which I preferred.

The Green Hornet
PLOT: By night, debonair newspaper publisher Britt Reid (Rogen) fights crime as a masked superhero known as The Green Hornet. At his side is martial arts expert Kato (Chou).

CAST: Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds), Cameron Diaz, Tom Wilkinson

VERDICT: It looks like he balked and added a lot of humor, but it has the best of both worlds. It has that Iron Man feelaction-packed and full of laughs, and it's like Batman meets Bond. He's got a kick-ass sidekick, super cool gadgets, a souped up car, killer fighting skills, and a ridiculous villain. Sounds like fun!

Release Date: February 18

Green Lantern
PLOT: A test pilot (Reynolds) is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.

CAST: Ryan Reynolds, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Blake Lively (The Town and "Gossip Girl")

VERDICT: I love Reynolds's humor and his enthusiasm, but those other Green Lanterns and the super thin costume don't look very well-designed. And don't even get me started about Lively as a brunette. I dunno. It just kind of looks cheesy.

Release Date: June 17

Which one are you going to see?

TRAILER: Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, & Cate Blanchett's "Hanna"

PLOT: A 14-year-old (Ronan) who was raised by her father (Bana) to be a cold-hearted killing machine connects with a French family who look to help ease her into a more conventional life.

CAST: Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hollander (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and In the Loop)

VERDICT: After seeing Kick-Ass this year, I'm all for more midget assassins. This one is way more dark and serious than that movie, but it's still filled with that girl power vibe, which I love. I'm very impressed with Ronan. I didn't think she could pull off vicious or calculated, but I clearly underestimated her. None of that is why I want to see the film though. It kind of looks like, near the end of the trailer, that Blanchett actually ordered Bana to train her to become an assassin and that this was all a test. That's not her father and she's not really her target. If so, then this has Bourne trilogy potential.

Release Date: April 8

TRAILER: Johnny Depp's "Rango"

PLOT: A chameleon (Depp) that aspires to be a swashbuckling hero finds himself in a Western town plagued by bandits and is forced to literally play the role in order to protect it.

CAST: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher (Confessions of a Shopaholic), Timothy Olyphant ("Justified"), Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Ray Winstone

VERDICT: Like radio, animated voiceovers used to be reserved for the beauty-challenged and the barely employed. Just in the last few years, though, producers have been trying to score bigger and bigger names, from America Ferrara (How to Train Your Dragon) to Brad Pitt (Megamind). Now they've managed to get Depp behind the mic. It's a draw, but not the biggest incentive. I like that it's a Western. I like that the design isn't glossy or cute. I like that animals that aren't usually included in animated films are front-and-center. And I like the accents. But what really got me interested was that, like the cast of Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox, Gore Verbinski had his cast physically act out the story on a soundstage. That just adds to the coolness.

TRAILER: Ed Helms's "Cedar Rapids"

PLOT: A naive Midwesterner (Helms) insurance salesman travels to a big-city convention in an effort to save the jobs of his co-workers.

CAST: Ed Helms ("The Office" and The Hangover), John C. Reilly, Isiah Whitlock Jr. ("The Wire") Anne Heche ("Hung" and "Men in Trees"), Sigourney Weaver, Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine), Mike O'Malley ("Glee"), Alia Shawkat (Whip It)

VERDICT: The funniest scene was when Helms commends Whitlock for breaking out a good ghetto accent, and Whitlock responds by attributing the accent to his many viewings of "The Wire," which he actually starred in. Of course, that's not enough to get me to the theater. Also, I was a little freaked that 36-year-old Helms has a wild night out on the town with 21-year-old Shawkat. It was a little gross. I do, however, think that Heche looks amazing as a redhead.

TRAILER: Felicity Jones & Ed Westwick's "Chalet Girl"

PLOT: An English maid at a ski resort falls in love with a rich Brit.

CAST: Felicity Jones, Ed Westwick ("Gossip Girl"), Sophia Bush ("One Tree Hill"), Brooke Shields, Bill Nighy, Nicholas Braun ("10 Things I Hate About You"), Tamsin Egerton (St. Trinian's).

VERDICT: I love British indies, so I'm sold. I'd even be sold if Westwick and Bush, who I love, weren't in it. But I don't know if I'd spend $13 for it.

Release Date: February 18 (UK)
