Bottom line: it was shit.
Alfonso Cuaron is an amazing director, the abundance of jarring p.o.v. shots, and his directing of
A Little Princess and
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban prove that. But the writing was shotty and the minor characters were underdeveloped. The only thing that saves the film—and made it an understandable possible Oscar nominee—is its testament to the miracle of birth and seeing how it can silence chaos. Except for that, it’s clear why it only made $35 million.
