As expected, Blades of Glory cleaned house with a respectable $33 mil. And while the big kids went to go see Ferrell in action, the little kids gave Meet the Robinsons the #2 spot with $25 mil. Not the most impressive opening for an animated film—Finding Nemo grossed $70 mil the first weekend, Madagascar $47, and even Over the Hedge (a film of mediocre humor) grossed $38—but at least it beat out Valiant's pathetic $19 mil. 300 and Wild Hogs are still holding strong in the top 5. TMNT predictably dropped to #4 with $9.2 mil. And The Lookout premiered as any indie would be expected to at #11 with a measly $2 mil.
Depending on the playground buzz about Meet the Robinsons, it could be drop kicked out of the top 5 after Are We Done Yet? premieres. For horror movie lovers, The Reaping will terrify viewers with the world's 7 deadly plagues. But of course the weekends most talked about release will be Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse double feature. I have no doubt that Ferrell and Heder were hilarious, but I don't think they can compete against director star power + half naked chicks + zombies + jam-packed action.
