FILM: Rocky Balboa Review

I was expecting this to be the Gigli of prick-flicks (opposite of chick-flicks) and it—like Gigli—wasn't as ridiculously horrible as everyone made it out to be.

Rocky Balboa is the 6th installment of a boxer's tale of glory. Sylvester Stallone, the Italian Stallion, owes credit to this character, as well as Rambo, for his skyrocketing stardom. The theme song is immortalized. Memorable quotes as simple as Rocky belting, "ADRIAN!!!" made him legendary. In this film, it's been 30 years since his first famous fight and he's an old, old man. His boy, Robert (Milo Ventimiglia), is all grown up—yet for some reason filled with teen angst—and his old buddies are just as crusty. After ESPN uses animation to simulate a fight between the once great Rocky Balboa and Mason "The Line" Dixon (Antonio Tarver), a cocky African American boxer with a rapper-like lifestyle, Rocky starts thinking that maybe he could give it another shot. However unrealistic or completely ill-advised this may be, you eventually root for him. It helps that Dixon is a cocky little shithead you want Balboa to bury. By far, the most interesting part of this film are the frequent inspirational speeches that he imparts on anyone and everyone who believes they're as worthless as everyone else thinks they are. Rocky fights in the ring ultimately to win for all of the underdogs. And if you want to know if the underdogs win, rent it.
