FILM: Box Office Results - 5/7/07

Needless to say Spiderman 3 spun its spell on the world grossing a ridiculous $148 million giving Pirates of the Carribean 3, premiering in 18 days, something to live up to.

I contributed to Tobey's retirement fund. As always, the special effects were astounding, especially for "the crane accident." But not all of the characters were worth 9 figures. Mary Jane and Peter were their usual selves. But, Thomas Haden Church's Sandman left something to be desired. It got me thinking about the casting decisions for the Batman Begins sequel. I hope none of those impressive actors translate into dead weight. I mean, the Sandman's expressions and visual style were great, but he was only there to pull on the heart strings and evoke the Spiderman/Venom monster that Tobey became. Speaking of which, Venom in costume = aesthetically terrifying, without costume as Peter's freelance photojournalist competition = sucked ass. If you know Topher Grace's "That 70s Show" character Foreman, then you know sometimes he has a faux self-confidence that comes off as pathetic and embarrassing, which is the persona that his character Eddie Brock had. I just couldn't take him seriously. There is nothing funny about the Green Goblin, even though he's completely out of his mind. I don't want to laugh at the villains; I want to be scared by them.

James Franco, on the other hand, had quite the mission in this film. I'd say it was as much his as it was Tobey's. He had to play both sides of the morality spectrum and he was a way more interesting villain than the other two buffoons. You connected with him more since you knew his entire backstory. Lastly, an insignificant honorable mention to Bryce Dallas Howard's character Gwen, who simply served to be the dimwitted, dense, brain dead blonde. Seriously, Jessica Simpson could've did this with her eyes closed and even her mouth shut.

Lucky You did okay for competing with Spidey, coming in at #6 with $2.5 million. Waitress was only released in 4 theaters and it made a reasonable $111,000. Meanwhile, Paris Je T'Aime was only released in 2 theaters and it made $37,000.

In the rest of the top 10, somehow, some way, Disturbia is still hanging on at #2, raking in $5.7 million. Ryan Gosling caught a break, Fracture jumped up a spot to #3 with $3.4 million. It's probably because people realized how much The Invisible sucked, despite the fact that it's still holding on at #4 with $3.1 mil. And somehow word of mouth brought people back for more of Next (#5) and The Condemned (#10).

Of course, nothing will push Spidey out of the top spot for next week. But I suspect that worshippers of 28 Days Later will pay up to see 28 Weeks Later. And maybe the 5 people that still have any respect for Lindsay Lohan will go watch Georgia Rule. There really is something for everyone next week though. The Lohan flick is perferct for Mother's Day. The Ex, a comedy with Zach Braff, is a good one for a maybe a third date if you want to get the "what was wrong with your ex?" question (translation: what shouldn't I do to ruin this?) out of the way. Okay fine, too much too soon? How about the romantic comedy Blind Dating with Chris Pine (Just My Luck). I guarantee you, watching a blind guy trying to find the girl of his dreams will get you in good with either the girl or the guy your on a date with. If you are in desperate need of some indie drama with big names, you could see Home of the Brave with Samuel L. Jackson, 50 Cent, Jessica Biel, Christina Ricci, and Chad Michael Murray. But if you're looking for action, just go watch Spiderman 3 again and take pee breaks whenever Mary Jane is whining.
