FILM: Box Office Results - 9/10/07

Batman saved Russell Crowe's ass! Throw on a cowboy hat and call yourself an outlaw, and you get the #1 spot in the box office. Alright, so 3:10 to Yuma only made $14 mil, but for a western that's like a billion dollars. Time magazine agreed that "this formerly beloved genre is due for a revival." Now let's hope Hollywood doesn't run it into the ground.

Meanwhile, it's a good thing Clive Owen has the upcoming Elizabeth sequel to save his career, because even though Shoot Em Up debuted at #6, it only made $5.5 mil. The New York Times ripped it a new one saying that it's a "witless, soulless, heartless movie that mistakes noise for bravura and tastelessness for wit." If Owen isn't careful, his career will trail down the crapper right behind Will Arnett's, a comedian who really can't seem to get any laughs on the big screen. The Brothers Solomon didn't even place in the top 10 and it only grossed half a million dollars. Newsday said: "These sibs make the dim bulbs of such Farrelly Brothers' comedies as Dumb and Dumber and Me, Myself and Irene seem like Mensa Club members."

Not all idiotic comedies are getting the shaft. Balls of Fury is at #4 with $24 mil. Meanwhile, Halloween seems to be running on good word of mouth at #2 with $44 mil. The last three blockbusters of the summer, Bourne Ultimatum, Rush Hour 3, and Hairspray, are still rolling in the triple digits. Death Sentence dropped four spots and will barely graze $20 mil. A movie very similar to its vengeance-scenario, The Brave One, comes out this friday. In its company are Viggo Mortensen's Eastern Promises, Sean William Scott's comeback Mr. Woodcock, and a bevy of indies starring Tommy Lee Jones, Daniel Radcliffe, Evan Rachel Wood, Keira Knightley, Diane Lane, and John Heder.
