Brokeback Mountain has opened quite a few doors for screenplays focusing on gay characters. First Sean Penn, James Franco, Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) sign up for Milk, the biography of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk. And now Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor have signed on to star in I Love You Phillip Morris, a biography of a married con artist who fell in love with his cellmate. His love for Morris motivated his escape from prison four times and got him a 144-year sentence.
The question still remains whether or not moviegoers will flock to theaters to soak in the bios the same way they did Brokeback, and whether studios will even take the risk of giving them wide releases. If anything, I'd watch because of the caliber of actors. This would be a huge change for Carrey, as well as the rest.
