TV: "Unhitched" Review

The new FOX comedy show "Unhitched" may have been promoted as "The Office" alum Rashida Jones' breakout opportunity, but that would be rather difficult since she's not even the main character. The show is actually headlined by 43-year-old Craig Bierko ("Boston Legal"), who plays Jack/Gator, a guy who is in the midst of a divorce after his wife left him for another guy. By his side, to provide some level of comfort, are your a-typical bffs: the sleazy ladies man, Tommy (Johnny Sneed from "The Guardian"), the dorky smart guy, Dr. Bill (Shaun Majumder from Harold and Kumar)--who in this case got dumped by his wife 6 months ago and is still pining for her--and the token chick, Kate (Jones), who provides logical reasoning.

The cast choice--three guys and a girl--reminds me of "The Drew Carey Show." The plot is reminiscent of CBS's "The New Adventures of Old Christine," since they both possess lead characters who have to figure out what to do with themselves when they realize that they're in their mid-40s and loveless. The humor however is borderline "Scrubs."

For the pilot, Jack gets raped by a monkey while he's on a date with a girl who "rescued" an orangutan and has a fetish for watching primate mating rituals. Not only did he need stitches, but one of his female coworkers practically tried to rape him again after an office party, which led to him jolting awake on the couch slashing at the air with a knife when the doorbell rang in the morning. Tommy is so irresponsible and...let's say challenged, that he almost liquored up a 16 year old and took her home. Dr. Bill decided to celebrate his birthday by recreating the way he and his wife used to celebrate it: going to TGIF. Since he didn't want to seem pathetic, he took a date...a hooker to be exact. He is so gullible that she's able to convince him to go to Atlantic City to have some real fun, as opposed to his plan of eating really good cheesecake. She showed him such a good, completely platonic time that he tries to propose to her. Unfortunately, keeping her overnight and taking her across state lines jacks up her fee--according to her pimp (Johnny Knoxville...yes that Johnny Knoxville)--to the grating sound of eight grand. But the worst date of all had to be Kate's, who was a tad squeamish about going out with a short guy and then had her fears confirmed when in the middle of her date at an NBA game he gets up, takes the court, and rips off his suit...because he's "Lucky the Leprechaun." Honestly, I can't think of a date on "Sex in the City" that can top that humiliation-wise. Although Miranda's date with Will Arnett where he took her to his parent's house so they could get caught having sex in front of them comes to mind.

BUT, does a couple of sewn together bad dates and over-the-top antics equal a comedy show? And does anyone really care about this guy and his freshly divorced persona? I guess I could watch another episode, especially since there's nothing on on Sundays.
