FILM: Captain America = Matthew McConaughey?

I'm not a big Captain America fan or anything, but it seems after Robert Downey Jr.'s huge success at the box office with Iron Man, Matthew McConaughey is looking into franchising. He's the favored candidate for rocking the patriotic spandex suit of the American hero.

The comic lore about the infamous character is that he was once a "sickly young man who was enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum in order to aid the United States war effort during the Second World War." Some insiders are worried that our country and foreign markets won't be too keen on anything super-patriotic due to our present war climate. But Iron Man alludes to our chaotic time period, Middle Eastern enemies, and controversial politicians, and it did just fine.

At the end of Iron Man's credits, we meet Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, who is in association with The Avengers under his organization S.H.I.E.L.D. Captain America is the leader of The Avengers and his crew--which varies in the comics--will consist of Iron Man, Hulk and Thor. There's no word on whether Downey Jr. will play this version of Iron Man--especially since he already has a sequel in the works--or Edward Norton/Eric Bana will play Hullk in the film, but the likelihood of all of them getting their schedules synchronized isn't very high. It's scheduled to be in theaters in July 2011.

What do you think of McConaughey as Captain America?
