ALBUM REVIEW: Jessie J's "Who You Are"
The 23-year-old British import, who's written songs for Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, has a shockingly fresh 90s R&B rhythm despite her gothic appearance. On tracks like "Abracadabra" and "Who's Laughing Now" she reminds me of Lauryn Hill and fellow Brit Estelle. She even delves into reggae-tinged rhythms on "Price Tag" and "L.O.V.E." My favorites on the album though are the songs where she puts her vocal chords to the test. On "Nobody's Perfect," "Who You Are" (below), and the rock-infused ballad "I Need," she sounds like she's aching through every bar.
