FILM STRIP: future flicks
THE QUIET
If you're a fan of low budget suspense thrillers or thought provoking indie flicks, then you've probably seen Camilla Belle in When a Stranger Calls and The Chumscrubber. But once you see this movie, your perception of Belle as the pretty, misunderstood, and frightened hot girl will be drastically changed. Playing the eye candy is none other than veteran "hot teenager" Elisha Cuthbert (Girl Next Door). Meanwhile, Belle flexes her acting muscles by portraying a deaf adopted girl who witnesses the odd-going-ons of her new family and her new town. It's a borderline indie flick with a touch of box office thriller. Cuthbert plays a sexually abused teenager who’s had enough and plans on teaching her perverted father a lesson by murdering him. She confides her plot to Belle, carefully miming her confession so she could read her lips. It seems like everyone around Belle's character treats her as if she's a non-entity, as if they can say and do anything in her presence and she'd never tell. She knows all their secrets and it's up to her to stop Cuthbert. Watching Cuthbert snap is bone chilling. Not as gritty as Mysterious Skin, but as suspenseful and striking as Hard Candy. Last year indie flicks were all about guys taking a stand and going through some tumultuous stuff, but now it's all about the ladies. There’s a new wave where girls are just not taking anymore shit from anybody, and Camilla Belle and Ellen Page (Hard Candy) are leading the pack.
FLYBOYS
James Franco leads the cast in an amazing period piece (that critics will mention mirrors Top Gun) with great graphics/CGI that isn’t as gaudy as Stealth, but is as poignant as Aviator. The acting showcased in the trailer seemed adequate, but the story of these guys who form this sort of fraternity against the people who killed their fellow pilots, who are essentially their best friends, is very moving. I think it’ll do okay in the box office, depending on the competition.
