MUSIC Minute: New Singles

John Mayer has been trying to reinvent himself and diversify his resume from those of Jason Mraz and Justin Timberlake, by adding the word "Trio" to his name and a few musicians to his act. But we ladies love him for his raspy voice and insightful lyrics. What better way to re-enter our wonderland than to wow us with his new single “Waiting on the world to change,” sans the Trio.

Joining the wave of reinvention alongside Mayer and Christina Aguilera, Beyonce performed at the "BET Awards" last week debuting her single that is anything but “Déjà vu.” She's never belted out her talents over a rhythm like this before. The song seems like a forced up-beat love song, but her performance and her vocals, as usual, were phenomenal. The perpetually "retired" Jay Z rhymed right alongside her with what seemed like an effortless flow.
After Ciara lent her soft slow vocals to Field Mob's "So What," a song about ignoring the gossip that girls spread about your boyfriend, it was only natural that she heat up the summer with her own single "Get Up." It has the same smatterings of “1, 2 step,”s talking-vocals, but is chalked full of more actual singing. The beat, of course, is hot enough to pop off any night at the club. Producers of the dance movie Step Up thought so as well, as it will be joining Sean Paul's "Give it up to me" on the movie's soundtrack.

Riding off the success of her "Stars are blind" single, Paris Hilton will soon be releasing "Turn it up,” raspily encouraging everyone to party with a hot beat. It has a touch of Gwen Stefani and Madonna, with a R&B influence. It probably won't dominate the airwaves, but it'll definitely solidify her claim that she should be taken seriously as an artist. Nicole Ritchie has quite an act to follow.

I'm now waiting for a new release from Eminem. After his surprise appearance at the "BET Awards" last week during Busta Rhymes' performance, I suddenly realized how much I missed the hard-hitting hater and his brow-beating lyrics.
