Ironically, Halloween was a hit on Labor Day weekend, grossing $30 mil despite the lack of critic support. Their praise was equally sagging when it came to Balls of Fury, which debuted at #3 with $16.8 mil. Kevin Bacon's comeback has been postponed after his thriller Death Sentence came in at #8 with $5.2 mil and absolutely no love from the critics. They weren't too fond of the idea that Bacon was rebuking violent behavior by being violent. Clearly they didn't get that it was just an excuse to watch people get f*ed up. Indie The Nines made a respectable $28,000 in the two theaters it was released in.
Mr. Bean's Holiday only dropped two spots to #6 with $21 mil. The Nanny Diaries is still struggling, only amounting to $16 mil so far. I guess the mixture of most women being on vacation and the fact that Johannsson dared to date Justin just screwed this movie over. War dropped 4 spots to #9 and has only grossed $18 mil to date. Stardust has only recouped half of its budget, $32 mil, in the four weeks it's been in theaters and its already dropped to the #10 spot.
Putting those flicks to shame are Superbad, in its third week and already dangerously close to the $100 mil mark, Bourne Ultimatum, at this point just collecting donations for baby Damon's college fund with a ridiculous $202 mil, and Rush Hour 3, making Chris Tucker unnecessarily rich with $122 mil in the bank. The Simpsons and Hairspray have finally bowed out of the top 10 with $178 and $112 mil respectively.
Next week, Shoot Em Up will surely make Death Sentence look like a Shakespearean novel. Speaking of teetering careers, 3:10 to Yuma will determine once and for all whether Russell Crowe's still got it. The SNL-alum packed Brothers Solomon will duke it out with Balls of Fury for a spot near Superbad in the top 5. And Hatchet will most likely stare adoringly at Halloween from a distance...unless of course people are dying for a scare.
