FILM: Box Office Results - 10/1/07

The Kingdom needed a better Game Plan. Beat out by a pretty little girl and a dog in a tutu? That's sad. The Rock's kiddie flim came in at #1 with $22.7 mil, while The Kingdom came in at #2 with $17.7 mil. The New York Times called it "a slick, brutishly effective genre movie: Syriana for dummies," which is kind of a compliment wrapped in elephant dung. Feast of Love came in at #11 with close to $2 mil. Perhaps it was plagued by critics' complaints of how juvenile and unlikely the whole plot seemed. Sometimes I wonder if critics realize that ALL of it is made up; none of it is actually supposed to seem plausible. Ang Lee's Lust, Caution didn't fair any better. Critics kept mentioning how bored and sleepy they were while watching the NC-17 rated "eroto-feminist" spy drama. In spite of that, it made $60,000 in the only theater it was released in. As for Wes Anderson's indie, The Darjeeling Limited, which was released in 2 theaters, some critics cheered his evolution and others were disappointed by how lame the jokes were. Either way, it made $140,000.

Resident Evil: Extinction, Good Luck Chuck, and 3:10 to Yuma round out the top 5. Meanwhile, Amanda Bynes' trainwreck Sydney White dropped three spots to #9 and has reached $8 mil. And the last blockbuster of the summer has finally dropped out of the top 10. Bourne Ultimatum leaves with $222 mil domestic and $145 mil over seas.

Next week we test the attraction kids have to magical chosen ones when the adaptation of The Seeker: The Dark is Rising hits theaters. Ben Stiller and Dane Cook face off for the top romantic comedy spot when Stiller's The Heartbreak Kid swoops in. Jake Paltrow, Gwen's little bro, premiers his feature film directing debut with the help of the sultry Penelope Cruz and the deadpan Martin Freeman in The Good Night. And for the teenagers who are interested in celebrities, music, dance, and getting inspired, Omarion presents his leading man debut in Feel the Noise.
