Nicholas Cage continues to rule the holiday box office, reaching $124 mil at #1. Alien vs. Predator: Requiem managed to take in $29 mil at #6 and The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep was poorly received, grossing a measly $17 mil at #7. Denzel Washington's The Great Debaters' came in at #11 with $13.5 mil. With a 16-theater release, the pricey Bucket List grossed a skimp $618,000, while There Will Be Blood managed to gross $310,000 in just 2 theaters. Meanwhile, the animated film Persepolis took in $167,000 in 7 U.S. theaters, but faired a bit better overseas, grossing $13 mil.
I am Legend relinquished the #2 spot to Alvin and the Chipmunks. Smith has accumulated an impressive $194 mil and those darn cute chipmunks are up to $142 mil. Charlie Wilson's War and Juno round out the top 5, taking in $34.5 and $25.5 mil respectively. Juno jumped five spots from #10 to #5, and since it was hilarious I can see why. P.S. I Love You is still suffering from poor reviews and probably a poorly chosen lead, having only grossed $23 mil so far. Sweeney Todd really tanked, placing at #9 with $27 mil. Enchanted and The Golden Compass are making their way out of the top 10. While Enchanted is retiring with a surprisingly high $110 mil, Compass only managed a measly $59 mil.
Next week doesn't have much to offer. There's an indie called The Killing of John Lennon and the horror thriller One Missed Call. Since I've seen almost all of the films in the box office, I'd recommend Juno, Enchanted, and The Golden Compass if these don't peak your interest. And if you'd rather stay in after a raucous New Years' celebration, you might want to rent the new releases: Resident Evil: Extinction, Shoot Em Up, or War.
