FILM: New in Theaters - 4/4/08

So many options. I'm torn between two romantic comedies, Leatherheads and Meet Bill, and the kiddie adventure, Nim's Island.

Leatherheads has the cute premise of a tough-as-nails reporter (Renee Zellweger) covering the story of an over-the-hill football legend (George Clooney) playing alongside a star college player (John Krasinski) as they try to legitimize football in 1925 AND win her heart. Here's the perfect opportunity for you to understand why "Office" fans are so in love with Krasinski.

Meet Bill, I've said before, is the first time I've seen a toned down version of Jessica Alba, where she's not overacting--Nickelodeon style. I don't even like Aaron Eckhart (No Reservations) that much, but I'm willing to watch him revamp himself in order to win back his wife (Elizabeth Banks from Definitely, Maybe) with the help of an over-opinionated teenager (Logan Lerman from "Jack & Bobby) and a sales woman (Alba), if only to witness the revival of the pre-"Dark Angel" Jessica.

Lastly, there's Nim's Island. I'm a fan of adventure tales and this one is a doozy. Abigail Breslin plays this Pippi Longstocking-type girl who lives on an island with her father (Gerard Butler from 300). When he goes missing after one of his expeditions, she writes to her favorite adventure author, beckoning her to save her dad. The problem is that the author (Jodie Foster) is writing fiction and that, although the character is much like Indiana Jones, she is more like Wilma from Scooby Doo. And if that isn't bad enough, she's also a hermit who is afraid to go outside and the character in her book is her imaginary friend/conscience (also played by Butler) who goads her into helping the little girl. That just sounds like 2hrs of slapstick fun.

But if neither of those sound interesting to you, there's always the indie starring the singer Norah Jones, Natalie Portman, Jude Law, and Rachel Weisz called My Blueberry Nights, a story about a girl who learns about love as she takes a journey across America. Or you can watch the horror movie The Ruins (which you can also youtube by. your. self.) Or you can see what it looks like when Martin Scorsese directs a documentary about The Rolling Stones in Shine a Light, with guest appearances by Jack White, Christina Aguilera, and even Marty himself.

Either way, this rainy weekend will be quite entertaining.
