TRAILER: How to Train Your Pet Dragon

Dreamworks turned the classic book How to Train Your Pet Dragon into an animated film. Unfortunately, after seeing the trailer, I'm not really all that impressed.

I feel sorry for any animated film that follows Up or Wall-E or even Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. They set the bar so high that anything that half-asses it looks like crap. If you're like me, and you love dragons—I mean, loved, because now I'm an adult and that would be weird. *clears throat* Anyway, if you like dragons, then you've probably seen a lot of different versions in films like Reign of Fire, Dungeons and Dragons, Dragonheart, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and Eragon, which means that by now you have standards. This dragon looks ugly and lazily drawn. It really kind of looks like a lizard bat.

Plus, the lead character Hiccup's voice sounds wayyy too monotone to listen to for 2hrs, especially since he's not being sardonic like "Daria." Sorry, Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up). Ending on a high note: I did like the last part of the trailer when he says, "Thank you for nothing—you useless reptile." It sounds mean, but...listen for yourself:

Release Date: March 26, 2010

Oh and this is even worse. That looks like a cheetah that got pulled out of the sewers:

  2. I like the fact that they did not use just standard dragons for this movie. It's is acctually a really good movie and is well done if you would give it a chance. This come from an animators point of view.

  3. One of the better animated films, thoroughly enjoyable and now resides firmly within my dvd collection. Only gripe is that the main character could have toned down his american accent or better still would have been best to have a british/scottish lead.

and am puzzled as to 1.how you possibly comment based on a trailer and 2. reference such terrible dragon movies and in the same breath mention "standards", this is the closest any movie has gotten close to being a decent dragon movie. And i say this as a person who has always been very interested in fantasy books/films.
