MUSIC: Beyonce's new single "Irreplaceable"

Beyonce's Sept. 5th release "B-day" didn't drum up as much praise as she expected. I have to admit that I wasn't crazy about the album myself. It took quite a long time for me to get used to the blaring noises in her first single "Ring the Alarm." What really won me over was the song's premise.

Now I find myself listening to her newest release "Irreplaceable" with the same hope for a story behind the lyrics. It's pretty much her declaration to her boyfriend or boy toy that he is replaceable and if he cheats on her or does anything she doesn't like, she has no problem finding someone else.

Beyonce and Destiny's Child has always been about feminism and asserting independence, but this song will most certainly go under a new era that will produce books, television specials, films, and of course albums where women have officially told guys "If you can do it, so can I." It isn't just about sports competition or professional success anymore. It's spread to relationships and sex. Women in the music industry are constantly trying to squash the double standard. Beyonce isn't by no means a pioneer of this idea, but she is a soldier/pawn in spreading the word to the next generation. For that alone, you have to download (legally or otherwise) this single. It could be your relationship motto for the new year. I think it's about time we stop worrying about being perfect and make it clear that we expect perfection (or as close to it as we can get) too.
