National Treasure remains at #1 with $171 mil. I am Legend surprisingly jumped from #3 to #2 with $228 mil. But the go-getter of the week is actually the box office's little-engine-that-could Juno that has been climbing the charts for weeks and has finally made it up top with the big boys to #3 with $52 mil. Rounding out the top 5 are Alvin and the Chipmunks at #4 with $176 mil and one of last week's premier's One Missed Call at #5, debuting with a paltry $13.5 mil. As for the other flick that premiered, The Killing of John Lennon, it was only released in one theater and made about a grand. Across the seas though, it made about $40,000. Charlie Wilson's War dropped two spots to #6 with $52 mil. P.S. I Love You, The Water Horse and Sweeney Todd are in the same spots (6, 7, 8) they were last week, barely keeping afloat. Meanwhile the very much critically adored Atonement teeters at #10 with $19 mil, which is impressive for its limited release that is a quarter of how many theaters all the other films are released in. Booted from the top 10 are Alien vs. Predator with $37 mil and The Great Debaters with $22 mil.
Debuting this week are three films: the hilarious Ice Cube-Tracy Jordan match up First Sunday, the sure-to-be cheesey Jason Statham video game adaptation In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, and the ignorable animated flick The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A Veggie Tales Movie.
And if none of those appeal to you, you could rent these new releases: the suspenseful western 3:10 to Yuma, the revenge flick Death Sentence, the lame fantasy adventure Dragon Wars: D-War, or the scifi adventure Sunshine.
